In 1992, after more than 40 years of communism, Romania opens to the world. Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous Tour” is coming to Bucharest, the nation’s capital. However, in the small city of Muscel, the state-owned truck factory will be sold within a week, putting 1,000 people out of work. A deal is struck with a French industrialist to produce canned snails, turning the truck factory into a “snail loft” and leading to a lay off of more than 600 people. The film follows George, the union leader, his mistress Manuela and the complications of love, changing priorities and the pain of privatization.
